Winners were selected from a pool of ten applicants based on their GPAs, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, recommendations and a 500 word essay describing how the recent economic downturn will affect them as a young adult going to college and how, through financial literacy, they can overcome those negative roadblocks in their future. Linda Birt, Executive Director of the Foundation noted that “financial literacy and higher education is more important now for teens and young adults than it has ever been in the past.”
