PEOPLE’S TRUST EMPLOYEE SELECTED AS ONE OF ELEVEN U.S. PARTICIPANTS TO INTERN IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
January 3, 2013
Jenny Serrambana, a Virtual Branch Expert from People’ Trust Federal Credit Union, has been selected as one of eleven U.S. credit union employees who will travel to the Dominican Republic later this month for a two week internship as part of the International Credit Union Leadership Program. Sponsored by the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU), the internship will take place January 13–26, 2013.
WOCCU’s website describes this opportunity as an “internship program that places young professionals in various credit unions overseas. The program is designed to facilitate idea exchanges, promote foreign language skill development, enhance cultural diversity and improve problem-solving skills as they relate to credit union development and management on a global basis.” Applicants were required to submit an application that included an English and Spanish essay, and a recommendation from the credit union’s CEO. Once selected as finalists, applicants were asked to participate in a phone interview with both English and Spanish questions.
Serrambana is the only participant selected from Texas; a state with a 38% Hispanic population, compared to the US average of 16.7%, according to the US Census Bureau’s website. Serrambana has worked at People’s Trust for four years and served in multiple departments at the credit union. She applied for the internship because of her interest in improving the ways credit unions serve the financial needs of the Latino community in Houston. She believes there is so much we can learn from credit unions in countries that serve low income members since that is the same situation a lot of Americans are faced with right now. When recommending Serrambana to the internship, President/CEO of People’s Trust, Angela McCathran said “Jenny truly believes in the credit union’s philosophy and is always looking out for the greater good of the member. She is frequently requested for service by many of our members, particularly our Spanish speakers, and has received numerous, positive member comments.”
People’s Trust, formerly Shell Employees Federal Credit Union, is a full-service financial co-op. Since 1935, People’s Trust has returned profits to members in the form of higher dividends on savings, lower loan rates and reduced fees. Though based in Houston, People’s Trust serves members across the world. For more information, please visit www.peoplestrustfcu.org.
